I went to a Barber state board meeting recently in the state of _______. A Hispanic barber was trying to get the board to allow him to take the test in Spanish. He passed the practical part with no problem but kept failing the written section. One board member said it would cost $70,000 for them to transfer the test in every language. Another board member said, "If I was in Mexico they wouldn't give me the test in English." The board decided not to allow the person to have a translator or give the exam in Spanish. Fair or not???

Easter WEEKEND: The Good, the Bad, The Ugly

Once again it was a blessed and fruitful Easter weekend. Most shops experienced one of the busiest weeks of the year during this time. Gotta give thanks... Now the good... We experienced a steady client flow all week, several new clients who heard about us came thru, the tips were big, and posted a top 10 Saturday. I also reconnected with some good former clients who did not know my new address.
The bad... appointments vs. walkins... I gotta take the blame for this one. When you walk in our shop, apparently it's not clear that we accept both walkins and appointments. A few appointments got out of their cars and walked right in our chairs; to the dismay of some clients. One regular client walked out super pissed cause I had an appointment even though he was waiting for a while. One suggestion I will try is to put a sign informing clients that others may have appointments so "check with your barber when you walk in." I need my barbers out there to tell me what works for them...
The ugly... The cable was almost cut off... Guess who forgot to pay the cable bill? It was a full shop, everybody watching the NBA and a big notice flashes on the screen and says, "Pay your cable bill or you will be disconnected." Everybody in the shop then looks at me.... REAL EMBARRASSING.

Why we do this.. Barbers that love their job

I had a new client come to the shop yesterday with his mom. He was about 12 years old and his mom was very frustrated about several of the last barber shops where her son got cut. Mom told me that she moved to the area 8 years ago and she has never been happy with the haircuts her son received. Before the haircut even started, she asked me if I could do a good taper because the last barber messed up her son's hairline. Now, I hear that a lot and its usually a hairline that's easy to fix. However, when I looked at this hairline, it was obvious that the last barber that cut it was 1) not licensed, 2) did not have barber experience, and 3) had no business working in a barber shop. The last barber had pushed the right corner back about 1 1/2 inches, and the left corner was also pushed back about an inch. The front of the hairline was also crooked. You could tell, from the length of the client's hair, that mom waited at least 3 weeks in order to let the mistakes grow out. The bad thing about it, you could still see the mistakes. After the hair diagnostics, I gave the client a clean, tight close fade with a 2 1/2 on top. Even though the cut looked 100% better, you could still see the last barbers hairline mistake. I told mom that I could either 1)push the hairline back like the last barber in order to make it look good for a few days or use my Bigen technique to cover up the pushed-in corner. She told me to repair it and I used technique I utilize for clients with receding hairlines and/or light corners. I covered up the bad corner while also allowing it to grow back in a few weeks. I should have took a before/after pic now that I think about it. Mom and her son loved the cut. It was normally a 15 minute cut but it took about 50 minutes. You could tell that they were extremely happy to find a good barber and I got the impression that they will be my clients for a long time. I didn't even charge for the Bigen. I was more satisfied about making someone happy; someone who had been looking for a good barber for years. Cuts and client/barber experiences like that are the main reason why I do this. Believe it or not, money is secondary...

How to handle SLOW DAYS!!

All barbers have slow days; some are slower than others. A slow day for you may be 10 heads; another barber may categorize a slow day as 3 heads. Either way, the question is what do you do on those days? Here are some suggestions:

1. Organize your client list in your phone, computer, or notebook.... make sure you have your clients names, cell&home numbers, & email.

2.Update your Myspace, Facebook, and/or Twitter page. If you are a barber and you dont have at least 2 of these promotional tools, what are you waiting for?

3. Adjust your blades-keep those blades sharp

4. Clean your blades-Use blade wash

5. Organize & clean your station-make it presentable, customers look at that, besides... mom taught you better than that.

6.Pass out some flyers and business cards-Slow days are perfect for this.

7. Call/text/email your clients-Let them know your schedule is wide open.

8.Buy some supplies- You can always use some neck strips or disinfectant.... razors, blades,combs, etc., etc.

9. Wash your towels,capes, and jackets-When was the last time you washed your cape???

10. Get a haircut- You never have time to get a real, unrushed cut.... Aren't you tired of cutting your own hair??

Now.... here are 1o things you don't want to do on a slow day....

1.Go over your boys house; the one who hasnt had a job in 3 years, and get blunted.

2.Go over your boys house and play Madden.(You are not coming back to the shop no time soon.)

3.Go over your baby mommas house and see what she has to eat. (You already know what's going to happen. Nothing nice.....

4.Go to the strip club

5.Got to the gym-(I'm glad your healthy, but you'll be too tired to do anything else if you are really working out)

6. Go to the multiplex and watch 3 movies.... a lot of fun but your day is done...

7. Go to the mall... Save your money...

8. Go to Applebees, TGIF, Hooters or any other spot and have lunch/drinks/appetizers.... Save that for after a good day... Once again, save money on a slow day.

9.Go to the studio and spit some lyrics.... give it up, your 35 years old

10. Start fixing your car... you need the whole month to fix that hooptie

Andis showcases 21 haircutters @ Bronner Bros Mid Winter show

Twenty-one stylists and barbers from across the U.S. took the Andis stage at
the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show in Atlanta, GA, February 21 -
23, 2009 to demonstrate their styling skills using Andis tools. Each participant
paid $100 for 50 minutes of fame to present an educational program on any
styling technique. All proceeds were donated to a local Atlanta barber
school selected by the management of Atlanta Barber and Beauty. Each
participant received an Andis gift package valued at $150.

Barber Shop Thief!!

I was cleaning up the shop on Sunday and began looking through the XBOX 360 video game stack I had. I noticed 2 games were missing out of the pile. After looking everywhere, I realized that someone stole the games. What infuriated me the most about the thievery is the audacity of the culprit. I am the type of person that would have let the person borrow the game for as long as he wanted if he would have asked me. I began thinking of all the people who had played the game this weekend and wondered who would rob me. I know the economy is terrible but some people ..... I'm pretty sure I know who took it but I cant prove it. Unfortunately, I have to go back to my New York demeanor and stop trusting everyone. Too bad.... I was beginning to like this southern hospitality.

Hello B.O.M. supporters,

We just got back from the Bronner Bros mid-winter show. It was crazy. I can honestly say it was one of the best winter shows at Bronner Bros. Thanks to all the hair show participants who supported B.O.M. and networked with us. We appreciate the luv. I want to give a special shout out to my comrades in the industry. Keep doing your thing. We see you.

2. Hire barbers who are good people.

3. Stop eating out and bring meals to the shop.

4. Stop smoking weed (before I come to work)

5. Stop drinking (in front of customers)

6. Exercise

7. Finally get some business cards

8. Get a credit card machine in the shop.

9. Advertise

10. Offer specials for clients

11. Stop trying to get phone numbers from the sexy clients

12. Stop getting mad when other barbers hate on my skills 1

3. Keep the shop clean

14. Keep my station cleaner

Shop hopping pt. 1: Georgia to Texas

I have been doing a little shop hopping the last couple of weeks in Georgia and Texas. This is when I fill up the car and hit towns and their barber shops. With gas prices below $2 a gallon; I had to do it. Here are a few funny episodes that have happened since I been on the road:

1. A barber and a client getting ready to fight in front of the barber shop. The barber says, "I'll fight you but you got that ratchet (gun) on you." The clients says, "Oooh, I can't wait until my boy finishes his haircut so he can hold my gun!" These dudes go back and forth for 20 minutes. I'm in the barber chair with half a haircut looking at my barber who doesn't seem impressed by either of these dudes. The barber comes back about 15 minutes later with a machine gun. I look at my barber again and he's more concerned that his boy didn't bring him back a double cheeseburger from McDonalds! Nothing happened. I guess that's a normal thing at that shop.

2.I hated to do it cause I'm a big music fan and I believe in supporting the artists. But..... this dude came in one shop selling cd's and he had everything!! Old school, new joints, mixtapes, stuff that wasn't even out yet. I'm like, "Dude, how did you get the Ludacris and Kanye joint 2 weeks before it was out? It's gotta be a mixtape right?" When I went in the stores to buy it 2 weeks later (told you I support my artists) it was the same cds. Still don't know how he did that.

3. I went to a bunch of shops the Wed. before Thanksgiving and i saw a beautiful thing; crowded shops! Like I told people, barber shops are recession proof. People want to look good; even in hard times. One shop had 10 barbers and about 27 people waiting; 30 minutes before closing. They were getting it done. Another shop had 5 barbers and about 12 people waiting but...... It was only 2pm and barbers kept dropping off and leaving. By 4pm there were only 2 barbers left. I guess they don't like money. The 2 barbers that were left were pissed. No telling what time they got out of their shop.
